Last night I talked and read a short essay at COMMVLVS II, the second installment of filmmaker Ben Hernstrom’s forum for the discussion of creative projects. The event was held at the CI13 (Carnegie International 2013) apartment in Lawrenceville. Other presenters included Bovey Lee, David Montano, Justin Hopper, Stephanie Armbruster, Dave Bernabo, and more.

I presented a quick slideshow regarding a narrative nonfiction project (essays, photographs, etc.) I’ve been working on that will (hopefully) chronicle the decline of suburban America from an original vantage point. I then read from a short essay titled “The Objects of the Dead,” which recounts my eye-opening experience at a recent estate sale in Pittsburgh’s eastern suburbs.

In an attempt to make the notes and essays from this series of stories feel less impermanent, I’ve decided to publish occasional print/digital editions. For last night’s event I created a limited-run print edition of “The Objects of the Dead,” and distributed it to attendees. I’ve also made it available in PDF format. Download link is included below.
